Easy Detox Water Recipe

It's that time of the year when everyone is trying to undo the damage from the holidays (cookies, cakes, and coquito...oh my!)

There are a lot of very effective products out there that you can buy BUT if you're like me, and on top of the fact that you need to beat the bloat you're also strapped for cash, there's a simple and effective detox water that you can make yourself at home.

What you'll need:

2 liters of water (about 8.5 cups)
3 stalks of celery
1/4 cup of sliced ginger

The Good Stuff

Ginger has a long-standing reputation as nature's ibuprofen, helping to settle upset stomachs and ease inflammation, but did you know that celery has the same effect? The combination of these two anti-inflammatory ingredients makes this detox water highly effective.

In addition to reducing inflammation, celery is also a source of vitamins K, A and C, and potassium. It also can help reduce blood pressure levels and urinary tract obstructions (funnily enough, I actually found this recipe while looking for natural remedies to flush out kidney stones, and I have been hooked ever since!).

According to Healthline, ginger is not only an anti-inflammatory, but also contains substances that may reduce blood sugar and cholesterol levels, reduce muscle pain and soreness, and improve heart risk disease factors. It's also an excellent treatment for nausea and indigestion.

How to Make It

Bring the water to a boil and add the celery and ginger. Both ingredients should be sliced, and for an extra spicy taste, smash a couple of the ginger slices to really bring out their flavor. You can use the bottom of a bottle or a rolling pin. I use my pilon. (For the life of me, I could not find an English translation for that word, but my Latino friends know what I'm talking about!)

Let the ingredients boil for 5-10 minutes, depending on how strong you want the taste to be. I let mine boil for 10. Then remove from the heat and let it cool down for about an hour before putting in the refrigerator. You can filter the ingredients out, or leave them in the water in the refrigerator.

The water will keep for about 5-7 days, but after that it'll start to have a strange aftertaste.

How to Drink It

It's best to drink the water cold. Depending on how long you let it boil, it may have a very strong ginger taste. You can add ground cinammon for sweetness, but absolutely NO sugar or honey.

If you're trying to detox quickly, you should drink the whole 2 liters within 3 days. Start with an 8 ounce glass in the morning, one at lunch and another after dinner.

The Results

By the end of the third day, you'll be going to the bathroom more frequently and you'll see a difference. These are natural ingredients, so you shouldn't have any stomach pains and you shouldn't expect immediate results. You have to give the good stuff time to get through your system.
